Brown Recluse Spider Bite?

Last night we had to take my 17 month old son to the doctor on a late night emergency appointment. Earlier that morning I had noticed two bites on his thigh, which looked at first like mosquito bites. As the day progressed however the swelling and redness continued to get bigger till it was the size of a silver dollar. There was also a blister in the center the size of my thumbnail. I called the doctor and we took him in. The theory they told us is they think the bite is from a brown recluse spider. I pray not. I was up most of the night keeping an eye on him and looking for worsening symptoms. He is on antibiotics and prescription topical cream and this morning the wound does not look any worse. It just looks the same.

The reason I am telling you all this is to let you know to be careful when you are both inside and out. Wood piles, playground equipment, bushes, rocks, storage sheds, just about anywhere you can find brown recluse and black widow spiders, the two venomous spiders in this part of the country. They also like to live indoors in dark places like closets, boxes, just about anywhere that is dark and out of the way.

Barns are also the perfect place for brown recluse and black widow spiders. Shavings bins are one place of choice for the brown recluse and corners and dark spaces are another place of choice for both spiders. So please be careful. Be watchful when handling shavings and look carefully before grabbing that piece of wood to toss out of them. Shake out boots/shoes before putting them on and squish gloves before putting them on. Watch when picking up your saddles and saddle blankets as they like to nest in dark spaces. Generally just be careful wherever you are when pulling things out especially if they haven’t been pulled out in a while. They are not aggressive spiders and usually only bite when pressed against the skin.

I don’t want to scare anyone, just inform you. I am guilty myself for not being careful when it comes to checking for venomous spiders. I will be more now. Some people don’t have much a reaction to brown recluse spider bites other than a little soreness and redness, others require extensive hospital stays due to large wounds coming from the dying tissue. Death has been reported very rarely. They aren’t sure if the severe loss of tissue is from the bite itself or an infection that set in.

The Internet is full of information and I spent most of the night last night trying to educate myself. Not sure if all the info made me feel better or worse! Just please be aware and listen to your gut feelings if you are bit and seek medical attention as soon as symptoms appear if they are unusual.
I am so glad I listened to my mom voice and took him in when I did. We feel early treatment is why his symptoms haven't become worse. But I am still very worried.

Beat The Heat Charity

Here is a charity I recommend looking into. Since we are involved in drag racing I have been looking into this for our area. If you are in the Cincinnati, Tri-State area and are interested in starting a local Beat The Heat program with this area’s police departments, contact me and see if we can combine our efforts. If you are interested in joining a program in your area or starting one up, contact the Beat The Heat listed on their home page or talk with your local police departments. We need to get these kids to stop racing on the streets!

Beat The Heat

Goals: To help EDUCATE the young people of our communities about the real problems of illegal drug and alcohol use, To EDUCATE everyone to the horrors of alcohol or drug impaired driving, To promote a better understanding between the Police and the communities they serve and, To EDUCATE the general public about DRAG RACING, and encourage everyone to not race in the street.

BEAT THE HEAT, INC. is a "Cops and Kids" oriented program which brings the young people together with the Police Officers who are there to help them. It gives both groups an opportunity to closely interact with each other so that each group can learn from the other things that will really make a difference for both groups in the community.

The theme of our program is "RACING FOR EDUCATION". Three of our four goals state specifically a goal of some kind of education. Many of the problems of our society today stem from the fact that many people are lacking in education. We can only make an attempt with the adults to get them to use their heads and think before they do something. However, we CAN get the attention of the young people and they are very capable of learning. We try to encourage those young people to STAY IN SCHOOL AND OFF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.

BEAT THE HEAT INC. also offers alternative extra-curricular activity for those youngsters who may not be able to make the sports teams in high school. Handicap Drag Racing is a sport in which ANYONE who can drive can participate on a fair and equal basis with everyone else. Your only limitation is your own ability to learn the technique and DO IT!

This sport is also one in which WOMEN can participate and, indeed, excel in direct competition with men. There are many, many women who Drag Race and several of them have advanced even into the VERY elite group of persons who drive the ultimate machine, the Top Fuel Dragster, at 300 Miles Per Hour.

With the advent of NHRA's new JR. DRAG RACING LEAGUE younger fans are now able to participate in Drag Racing at a very early age (8 years old).

There are many very good racers who are physically impaired and they are able to participate in this sport using their ability to drive and their competitive nature. They don't have to race in their own special class. They race and beat anyone who shows up in the other lane.

Participation in this program is a great deal of FUN. We invite everyone to participate and enjoy the good fun and fellowship. Check out the schedule of upcoming events and try to be there. You'll be glad you attended.

BEAT THE HEAT, INC. is a non-profit corporation recognized as tax exempt by the State of Texas and the IRS under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. ALL donations are tax-deductible.
This information came from the Beat The Heat's homepage. Check out http://www.beattheheatinc.org/ for more information.

The Day Charlie Went To Church

This collection of stories called, “What Will The Neighbors Think?” is a collection of true stories from my childhood and from my brothers’. I am the youngest of seven children and the only girl. Having six older brothers and growing up Catholic has produced quite a few interesting stories. I hope you enjoy them.

When I was a little girl I was allowed to get a puppy. Talk about pure joy. We went to the pound and I picked out a scruffy little guy who had a lot of personality. I named him Charlie. He grew up to be quite a dog. Fiercely protective over me and my brothers, but he also liked our friends and he became the neighborhood dog, much like Snoopy, but not quite as cute. He played with us, loved to go on car rides and was a great companion. We would use him to pull us up the hill in our wagon, then he would jump in and ride down with us. When he got tired of pulling us, he wouldn’t just sit down like most dogs, he would take off and deliberately run us into a tree. He had an ornery side to him and I swear he would laugh at us. He also hated to be left out of any family activity.

On one particular Sunday he decided to follow us all to church. Our church was only a few miles away. My mom was the organist there and she sang too. She was always in demand as she was very talented and had a beautiful voice. We also attended school at this parish so everyone knew us. The organist sat up and off to the side of the altar with her back to the altar and the congregation.

This particular Sunday was warm so the church left the main doors open. Part way through mass I could hear a slight commotion behind us. As I turned to see what it was, I saw to my surprise Charlie walking right up the middle of the main aisle. Since all the neighborhood kids knew Charlie they were all trying to call to him. He ignored them all completely. When he passed our pew I saw my father take a double take when he saw Charlie. He angrily in a hushed voice called to him. Charlie stopped, gave my father a look with a slight grin and trotted off straight to the altar. I saw my father put his hands over his face and peer out between his fingers like he watching a horror movie. Remember, my mom’s back was to the altar.

Charlie proceeded to trot straight up to the altar and stare right at the priest. The priest stared back, but continued on with the mass without missing a beat. After a few moments of listening to the priest, Charlie walked around the altar and started to investigate. The priest motioned to the altar boys to “get” Charlie. This became quite an amusement to Charlie as he began to run from them. He loved for you to chase him. He would wait till they got close and at the last moment dash away.

Now Charlie was running circles around the altar with two altar boys chasing after him. All the while the priest kept right on saying mass. The laughter from the congregation though kept getting louder. My mother, hearing the laughter tried to ignore it at first as she played and listened for her cues, but you could see her looking out of the corner of her eye at us, like what is wrong? When she finally did turn around and saw what was going on, my father at the same time slumped in his pew like he was diving into a foxhole during war. He knew she was going to blow.

I’ll never forget the horror on my mom’s face when she saw Charlie and the altar boys running around the altar like a racetrack. I’ll also never forget how her voice sounded like the Exorcist when she screamed at Charlie and pointed sharply at the door to go home! Charlie knew she meant it as he stopped, looked at her and then without any further ado trotted down the aisle and out to home. Mom looked at all of us with a look that makes you wonder if you should say goodbye to your friends now and ask them to pray for you.

We all knew that Charlie would not live to see tomorrow when we got home. I was praying that he would not be there, that he would be smart enough to hide out in the woods till mom’s wrath at being embarrassed would blow over. You did not embarrass my mother! Charlie was waiting there on the front porch for us when we got home. He did survive. He got off with a lecture, no supper and dragged to the log chain where he was to spend eternity according to my mother. He was pardoned the next day though. Luckily he lived to go on being the neighborhood dog and was the talk around school and the neighborhood. Charlie never did again visit church.

We never were allowed to get another dog after Charlie. I wonder why?

How Do You Keep It All Together?

This was a question posed by a mother on a message board I frequent. She is a stay at home mom with a one year old. She says she seems to be the only mom who doesn’t look her best and other moms seem to be mothering effortlessly.

There were very many great answers full of encouragement. We all were trying to tell her that just do the best you can and not to compare yourself to others. It is just an illusion that others have it more together than you do. Typical to my fashion, I tried to help answer her question with humor. Below was my comment back to her:

“No mom has it all together ALL the time. We all have our good days and bad.

Me? I don't always do my hair. I do put on a little makeup before leaving the house so I don't scare small children. My 17 month old is used to mommy looking scary without her "face on". I do shower everyday and try and put a clean shirt on, but that's about it. My house isn't filthy, but I would be very embarrassed if someone dropped by.

Why is it that no one ever comes by unexpectedly right after your house is clean? I only seem to get people who knock on my door when the munchkin just poured juice all over the floor; he and the dog are spreading it throughout the house; the garbage can is overflowing with dirty diapers; dishes overflowing the sink; dust on the furniture is deep enough to transplant a philodendron in; and I haven't had time to put on my face let alone put a clean shirt on with a bra on.

What my rambling is trying to say is, try and enjoy life. Look at yourself and your life with lots of humor and appreciate all you do have and all you can do. And those other moms you are unfairly comparing yourself to? I bet if you went up to them and asked them how do they look so put together, they would gasp at you in horror and disbelief.

Cut yourself some slack. You've only been on the job for a year. The hardest job in the world takes a lifetime to get it right.”

Have you ever compared yourself to someone who seems to be doing better than you? We all do I think from time to time, especially us moms. We need to stop comparing ourselves to each other. It only makes us feel inferior, like we can’t be as good as they are. That’s unfair to ourselves and can cause a cycle of depression that can be hard to break free from.

So the next time you see a mom with kids who seems to have it all together, go up and ask her how she does it. You will probably get one of two answers. Either she will be eager to share with you some great tips or she’ll break down into tears and exclaim she thought you looked like the mom who had it all together.

Walgreens Coupon Update

Update:

Apparently the Huggies online coupons are gone. They do go fast.
See previous post on the Walgreens coupon.
However, there were some coupons that came out in Sunday's paper in this area on 6/14.
To check to see if some came out in your area and if you are keeping your coupons in a file folder like I taught you in the post More Couponing Tricks, go to the Coupon Mom's Coupon Database, put in your state or region and hit GO. A page will come up with a search box. Just type in Huggies and see when the coupons may have been issued. It will show the date of issue and if it was in RedPlum (RP) or SmartSource(S). It will also tell you when they expire.

I still recommend the Grocery Game and you can get a FREE 4 week trial! Just please use imnotasupermom@yahoo.com as your referral. I get free membership weeks for every referral. It is really cheap and can save you up to 60% off of your grocery bill by telling you when the products are at their cheapest and where to find the coupons for those items thereby generating the best deal you can get.

My Savings From Kroger

Well, I hit it Mega Event sale that our local Kroger’s is offering this week.

Check out my post on Kroger's sale for this week: Click Here

I didn’t do too bad. I stocked up on some things, but didn’t go overboard. Some people really stock up. For example, certain varieties of Kellog’s cereal was on sale and was also part of the mega event. Combine that with $1.00 off coupons and cereal that normally costs over $3.00 a box costs only a $1.49 – about half. So many people will buy 10 boxes or more. I only got a few and left the rest of the coupons there on the shelf for some other lucky shopper. We don’t eat that much cereal and the varieties that were on sale weren’t the kind we normally like. We don’t have a separate freezer or endless shelves for large stock piling like some Coupon Queens do, but we do pretty good.

Most of the items I bought were from the Mega Event list, though I did buy a few other things that were on sale and I had some good coupons for. My savings were - Coupons of $20.03 & Mega Event Rebate of $15.00. According to my receipt when combined with the sale prices and Kroger Plus savings I saved $60.17. All in all not too bad. I filled to the rim all seven of my large reusable shopping bags with mostly name brand items and saved around 40% off of my grocery bill.

I am so thankful to God that we are blessed to have so much food in our house. We try and get a few items to put in the food pantry bin on the way out of the store. I hope you all take advantage of the sales going around at the different stores this week so you can save money too.

Kroger July 14, 2009 -- July 19, 2009

This week at Kroger is a whopper of a sale. They are having their mega sale where if you purchase 10 participating items, and receive $5 off your order instantly at checkout. All 10 items must be purchased in the same transaction, and there is no limit on the number of rewards per transaction. You can mix and match the items you purchase.

The final prices assume that you've purchased 10 participating items, thereby deducting $5 off your total order, or $0.50 off per item. The best bargains are listed below (check your local ad for the complete listing)*

Coupon Code - R = Red Plum / S = Smart Source - both from the Sunday paper with the date they were released.

Be sure to keep all your Sunday Paper's coupons in a file folder with the date written at the top. That way you can just go to the date and cut out the coupons you need.

Can A Supplement Really Fight The Aging Process?

Shaklee seems to think so.
I have not tried this product, but I do like most all of the Shaklee products I have tried.
There have been many, many great testimonials on Vivix though.

With their new product Vivix - Developed after years of research by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., Vivix Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic is a breakthrough dietary supplement in the fight against cellular aging. In laboratory studies, Vivix ingredients have been shown to impact the four key mechanisms of cellular aging.*

"Teach by Example"

From Winner's Circle Network with Lou Tice - 7/7/09

What is the best way to teach children? There are many theories about the most effective way to teach children. Some say repetition is important, while others say hands-on experiences are better. Some say kids learn best in a highly structure environment, while others think the freedom to experiment works best.

Here is what I think. The best way to teach children - is by loving example. This means that if you want your children to enjoy reading, cuddle them while you read to them, from a very early age. If you want them to be respectful, give them your respect. If you want them to be honest, tell them the truth. And, if you want them to be affectionate, treat them that way.

If you want your kids to be good communicators, give them plenty of interest and attention. And, if you would like them to eventually be capable of a good, solid relationship with a spouse, work on your own marriage until it shines. You see, it won't matter what you tell them, if what you do doesn't match up with what you say.

You can tell them to be honest, but if they know you cheat on your taxes, lie about being sick to your employer, or say one thing in public and another at home, they will learn from your behavior - not from your words.

So, if you want your children to be happy and competent, don't worry so much about exactly how or what to teach them. If you put your energy into living the best life you can, and make sure your kids know that they are well-loved, you will be teaching them a lesson that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Does Not Bringing In A Steady Paycheck Eat At You?

This is a question I posed in desperation to a local message board I frequent. I was desperate as I have been feeling so low about not bringing the income in like I once was. Here is what I wrote:

“Even as my toddler is whining at me as I type this, (he hates it when I get on the computer) I know being home with him is the best thing, but not making consistent money is making me feel worthless. Has anyone else ever felt this way?

I have always worked. I worked all through my pregnancy right up till I went into labor. I worked after he was born because I knew we needed the income, but I would have rather stayed home to take care of him. Then I got laid off which was a shock and I miss working to a point. I enjoy being home with him and feel it's the best thing for him, I just am so hard on myself because I don't bring in much money and we are barely making it.

I made the mistake of basing my self worth on always being able to take care of myself, working and making not a lot of money, but enough to make a living. Now that I'm not I feel worthless.

I would work in the evenings, but my husband doesn't want to have to watch our son every night. I can understand that since he works very hard during the day and I have another responsibility for caring for someone a short time in the evening as well. I have been trying to find things to make money at home with son, but I'm not very good at it. Selling just isn't my strong point. I have a blog and trying affiliate marketing, but again, I'm not very good at it though I will keep trying. I do the couponing, but not to the extent that some do as we don't have a freezer or the room for extensive stockpiling. I have managed to cut our grocery bill down quite considerably. I know that money saved is like money earned.

I have a supportive husband who works hard. I just feel bad that he is out there busting his b%@# and I am playing homemaker. He says I trivialize what I do too much, but I can't help it. I feel bad when things aren't perfect and not done to the extent I think they should be. But he never criticizes me on it which is nice.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand how hard being a stay at home mom (SAHM) is now. I was a working mom and when I got laid off I naively thought I was going to have all this time to get stuff done! Duh, I forgot about the full time position I paid someone else to do - take care of my son! He is the most demanding boss I have ever worked for. Right now he's going to "write me up" for spending too much time on the computer and not playing with him. He keeps whining and shoving this toy in my lap so I better wrap this up.

Thanks for letting me vent for so long.”

And now here are some of the few wonderful response I got from other stay at home moms:

“I feel for you and understand EXACTLY what you are saying. I will probably be writing the same post in the matter of months, when I get laid off. It is hard to SAH. You said that you used to pay someone to do the job before. Think of all the money that you are saving by not paying that person. I think that it is one of those, it can go both ways--feel guilty working, feel guilty staying home. You are sharing something with your DS who will grow up quickly--time. As long as you are making ends meet, I would not worry about it. When the economy improves, you can probably find a job quickly, so you can do what you want in your heart. Remember he is only little once.”

“This has always been my philosophy...you can NEVER get back your children's childhoods, those memories are a one time shot. The work force, however, will ALWAYS be there!

I'm telling you, as a mom of a 12 and 8 year old, slow down and enjoy these moments. They're going to go by so fast and you don't want to have any regrets.
Money cannot create memories and the love that your kids will have for you!”

“I remember once, a small bit in a magazine, totally up all the services a SAHM does and what you'd have to pay outside sources for that. It was well over $100,000. Not sure I could do anything legal that would pay that much.

So no, not having a paycheck never bothers me in the least.”

Yes, I understand he is only little once and I feel so blessed to have this time. You are right I should enjoy it more and not worry so much about money. It is just so hard. I feel guilty at spending any money.
He is such a joy to me especially since he is my miracle baby. I didn't know you could love someone so little so much!

So I say thank you to all those women for their words of encouragement. I hope this brings some encouragement to other moms (or dads) who feel the same way I do at times.
