If you are expecting this site to show a person whose house is spotless, with homemade meals and desert made from scratch on the table every night, the laundry always caught up, my kid always acting perfect and handmade gifts given for every holiday, then you’ve landed on the wrong site.

Why Does There Seem To Be More Cases Of Bad Behavior In Children?

I see it everywhere I go. Children behaving badly and I mean really bad. Maybe it’s because I am getting older, but there seems to be an increase in the number of children acting out.

Now, don’t misunderstand me, I know there are countless reasons to what I see as every child acts out now and then and I agree. Mine sure does!

I also understand that there are more special needs children such as those with Autism. I think there is a correlation with the rise of those numbers as well.

I also know that some parenting experts would say it’s due to a lack of parental discipline, too much exposure to violence, too much screen time with computes, phones and TV, etc.

To all of that I say, agree, agree, agree.

But I also know there is another cause – the amounts of household toxins have risen.

From perfumy laundry detergents and fabric softeners to household cleaners, to scented fabric sprays, children are much more exposed to dangerous chemicals in the home and school than ever before.

If you don’t think this is a problem, think again.

According to a report to Congress, the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) stated, “Indoor air pollution is one of the most important environmental health problems.”

Most homes have airborne concentrations of toxic chemicals 2-5 times higher than the air outdoors!

That is really scary as our children spend a great deal of time indoors in school and with the colder temperatures keeping them indoors.

Behaviors seem to be a symptom of this toxicity. Many studies have shown when certain cleaning chemicals are introduced, children’s behaviors change.

One study observed young children playing in a room where scientists observed via a 2 way mirror. The children were playing well with adult driven activities such as playing games, name writing, number writing and reading. Then a bottle of a popular pine smelling cleaner was brought into the room. The bottle was put up out of reach and just the lid removed so that the cleaner’s odor would slowly enter the room. Within ten minutes the scientists observed dramatic changes in the personalities of the children – crying, fighting, some children were writing their numbers backwards, others showing signs of dyslexia and others acting out.

When the bottle of pine smelling cleaner was removed and fresh air allowed into the room, the scientists observed the children slowly calming down and returning to pre-exposure behaviors. Hmmm.

Look at these photos:

Listen to this:

“Of chemicals commonly found in homes, 150 have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological disorders.” – Consumer Product Safety Commission

“More children under four die of accidental poisonings at home than are accidently killed with guns at home.” – National Safety Council

What really gets me are quotes like these are said to high ranking government officials and committees along with detailed reports and studies provided. What really bothers me is that nothing is being done about it!

It is truly up to us as parents to protect our children from these very dangerous toxins.

Do you know a child who seems to be worse than normal when it comes to behavior? Do you think those behaviors could be linked to chemicals? Would it be worth a try to use safer products for 30 days and see if that child’s behavior would improve?

Did you ever stop to consider that you are slowly poisoning your children? Does this sound like a harsh question to you?

Think about this for a moment: You have a small toddler. You are a good parent, you keep your cleaning supplies up out of reach. Why? They’re dangerous you say.

You also only clean after your baby has gone to bed. Why? Because they’re dangerous you say.

You never would let your toddler handle bleach or any other toxic chemical. Why? They’re dangerous you say.

Then why are you spraying them around the very same floors they crawl on, the very same windows they love to “kiss”, the very same cute, cuddly clothes and blankets they snuggle in?

What you clean with and what you use to clean your clothes plays a big part in the health of your children. There is absolutely no reason to feel forced to use these chemicals.

There are better alternatives!

This is why I choose Shaklee. They are safe, they work and they are even cheaper to use than the toxic national brands!

Recipe: Chocolate Covered Bananas

Do you have some over-ripe bananas dying a slow death on the counter?

No one will eat them because they are yucky, right?

Here’s a great way to use them and have a semi-healthy treat! You only want to use very ripe bananas so the mushy ones are perfect for this.

Peel bananas and cut off any brown areas.

Slice bananas in the size you want. I like to cut mine where they can be eaten in 2-3 bites. The chocolate will melt on little fingers if too big.

Melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips in a bowl for 1 minute in the microwave. Stir.

Take tongs and dip banana slices in chocolate. Take a spoon and cover banana slice on all sides with chocolate. With tongs transfer chocolate covered banana slices to a freezer safe plate, arrange in just one layer and not touching. Do not cover plate.

Work fast as the chocolate will cool quickly and harden. You may want to do melt small batches of chocolate at a time to prevent this.

Place open plate in freezer till frozen. They don't take long to freeze. Once frozen, wrap in small, individual pieces of wax paper, put in freezer bag and pop back into freezer.

Now you have individually wrapped, finger sized, semi-healthy treats the kids will love.

They taste like a frozen ice cream treat. Even those who say they don’t like bananas will like these since they taste more like ice cream.

Don’t worry about how they look. Mine do not look professionally dipped, but my family obviously doesn’t care as they disappear fast!

Hope you like this new way to use mushy bananas and the good banana sort of balances out the not-so-good for you chocolate, right? I like the way you think. ;)

My Kid is Being Bullied & I’m the One Who Wants to Fight

My son is 6 and he is being bullied in first grade. Actually it started in Kindergarten with the same kid, but the school did little to help. We tried everything to get the school to step in and stop it, but it was close to the end of the school year. I know they were hoping to ride it out till the end of the year so they didn’t have to deal with it.

My son is one of those good kids. Yeah, I know what you are thinking. You think he is either one of those goody-two-shoes or this mother is blind to his real behavior. Actually he really is a good kid. The teachers from pre-school on have always wrote outstanding remarks about him and he gets good grades. And he’s sweet, which makes him a target for kids like the one he is dealing with. This mean kid repeatedly hits and kicks my son and he is smart enough to do it when no adult is looking.

When this same kid started up again this year, I just about lost my temper. I so wanted to march down to the house as they only live a few houses away, look at that kid, use my scary mom voice and threaten to do to him what he’s been doing to my son. Then turn and tell the parents the same thing. That’s the mama bear inside of me.

Now of course I know I can’t go and threaten a little kid, but part of me so wants to do something, anything to protect my boy.

I am so confused on how to help my son. As the youngest of seven, fighting and standing up for myself came natural to me. In school if a bully hit me, I instantly hit back and hard. This often got me into trouble, but my parents always stuck up for me and agreed the best way to handle a bully was to give it straight back, then the bully never bothered you again.

Since the school offers little help in the matter and will instantly punish both children if one hits and the other defensively hits back, we are left with few choices. Of course we tell our son to tell a teacher, but often since the teacher didn’t witness the incident, she does little to nothing to punish the offender. This makes kids like my son feel that no one believes them and no one will protect them. This in turn makes the bully feel even more powerful since they got away with it and they can see that no one is going to stop them.

My husband and I told our son he has our permission to defend himself. We don’t want him hitting another child unless that child is hitting him, but he can and should defend himself. I know many people say we shouldn’t tell him it’s OK to hit back, but I would disagree. The schools do little to enforce the bullying rule and teachers are so busy, they can’t watch everyone all the time. This leaves our children vulnerable to the ones who are there to hurt them. Just like I believe every woman should learn self-defense, I also believe our children should have the right to defend themselves against any attacker – even if the attacker is another 6 year old.

The problem I am facing is, my son doesn’t want to hit back. While I admire his sweetness, I am frustrated with how to help him. He tells me he doesn’t want to get into trouble again. He learned early on that the teachers never see the kid who threw the first punch, but they always see the kid who throws the second punch and the school has him convinced he will be kicked out if he defends himself. Grrr, thanks school officials for twisting that around to putting even more fear into the kid getting bullied.

My son is also afraid of his inability to stop hitting him if he starts. I can understand his concern. He inherited my temper and he is very strong. He could easily hurt this child if he were to “lose it” and he doesn’t want that to happen.

I warned school officials that everyone has a breaking point and if steps aren’t taken to stop this, that my son could finally reach the point where he has had enough and will pulverize this child. That is something no one wants to happen.

I don’t know what else to do. We’ve tried talking to the father, the grandmother, who by the way allows her grandson to hit her, smack her and say awful things to her. She refuses to correct him because she feels sorry for him. She is a big part of the problem and I have tried telling her that she is doing him no favors by allowing that kind of behavior. The father just makes excuses, blames his ex-wife who walked out and she only sees the kids every other weekend kind of thing. I’m tired of their excuses and tired of them trying to make their problems ours.

I always turn to God for guidance and help, but lately all I feel is anger towards this child and his family. I want to scare them off with my own bad temper and threats of violence if it continues. I feel that my son is being hurt by this child and let down by the school who seems unable or unwilling to step in enough to protect him. As a fierce mama bear, I feel compelled to fight any threat made against my child, but also feel the tug of God wanting to teach me peace and forgiveness.

What do you do when you are torn between vengeance and wanting to violently protecting your child against a threat and what the Bible and God teaches us about compassion, love and understanding?

One thing is for sure, I’m getting fitter physically. To keep from storming down to their house I storm down the walking trails and hit the free weights with some really loud and really hard music. It helps me get out my anger and frustration and makes me way too tired to do anything else.

I highly recommend hard workouts when you are angry. Even just a brisk walk in the woods or at the very least sitting somewhere peaceful. It really does help.

I will continue to pray asking God for a solution. It is very hard though, not to go to God with anger in my heart. I hope someday that I can learn to quickly let go of the anger and let the peace God has for me to enter quickly. Till then, my muscles are sure going to get a workout!

Tune in for an inspirational Project MAHMA Call this Saturday!

Our host is Ms. Greg Moore (Director, FL). Before Shaklee, Greg was a manager for a Fortune 500® company working 60-70 hours a week and traveling every week.

The stress and travel finally took its toll and after a major health challenge, she knew it was time for some changes.

Not soon after, she met someone who shared Shaklee products and the Shaklee income opportunity. She started by switching brands, and within a few months of switching brands she saw a difference! Soon she began sharing Shaklee with others and saw her business grow. “After years of not believing my life and health could be any better, I found Shaklee,” says Greg. “Shaklee has made my dreams of owning my own business and better health come true.”

When she is not sharing Shaklee, Greg loves the outdoors including lots of walks with her golden retriever, Jake; spending time with her sister and her critters; and enjoying the awesome Florida scenery, beaches, and weather.

Joining Greg this week are Cindy McAsey (Senior Coordinator, KS) and Dawn Scott Oliphant (Associate, AZ).

Cindy is has been a Shaklee Business Leader for over 15 years. Her Shaklee business is called “Be Barefoot,” and she uses that name because thanks to Shaklee, she can grow her business and be barefoot most of the time! She works her business from their farm in Kansas and has successfully helped two children get started in the business and grow a steady Shaklee income also.

Dawn is a “mompreneur” with two boys ages 11 and 9. She has also been married to her high school sweetheart for 21 years. After working a day job in city government for 17 years she made the step to transition from her day job away from her home and family to a fun job working at home with her family. She is on a mission to empower moms and provide them with an avenue to contribute financially to their families!

Carpet Cleaning Tip

I cleaned my living room carpet today. Cleaning carpets is not my favorite thing to do, but I do love the way they look and smell clean afterwards. With kids and pets, that feeling can be short lived.

I used to pay the popular companies to come and do it, because it always seemed to be such a big job. The problem with paying them to do it is they never did a good job, they rushed over cleaning them, they used way too much water, soaking my carpets and they always used these toxic, very strong smelling cleaning solutions.

I finally decided to buy my own carpet cleaner and do it myself. Once I learned by trial and error how the best way to do them, I never again will waste my money on a carpet cleaning company again. And you don’t have to either.

I clean my carpets twice a year and spot clean as needed. In the spring, I will remove all the furniture and clean the entire carpet, but in the fall I will just do the “living areas” around the furniture where everyone walks. The carpet cleaner I have is a Hoover Turbo Scrub Spin Scrub 50 and I really like it. I’m not sure you can buy that one anymore, but Hoover makes some other nice ones. Ask around and read reviews to find the one best for you.

Be sure to find a model that has the two tank system – one for the clean water and one for the dirty water. Stay away from the ones that have it all in one tank, where you have a rubber “bladder” that holds the clean water which is in the tank that holds the dirty water. Trust me, the two tank system is much easier to clean and you don’t have to worry about having any “bladder” that will rupture.

Also make sure all the pieces of the machine are easy to take apart and clean. After working on your carpets all day, you want a machine that is easy to clean. You will be tired and having something that is easy to take apart and clean will be a blessing. Be sure to clean your machine a soon as you are done. If you wait, the dirt, hair and debris will dry and get crusty, making it hard to clean out later.

The important thing to remember with cleaning carpets is to NOT saturate the carpet with too much water. This is a big mistake many do-it-yourselfers (and even professionals) make and here is why - when you put too much water in the carpet, it soaks through to the pad and no amount of suction is going to pull it back out. This can cause mold and mildew to develop, which in turn can cause terrible respiratory problems like allergies and asthma.

You also do not want to use too much cleaning solution. If you use too much cleaning solution, it stays on the carpet and will actually attract dirt to your carpets.

So how do you find the right ratio of water and cleaning solution to use?

First thing is, do not follow the manufacturer’s directions. Of course you follow their directions on operating, cleaning and maintaining the machine, just not when it comes to the amount of water and cleaning solution they recommend. They recommend way too much of water and cleaning solution!

For most carpets, only doing one “wet” stroke is best. A “wet” stroke is where you are pushing the carpet cleaner while holding down the water spray button. If you do more than one “wet” stroke, you risk over-saturating the carpet with water. I push on the “wet” stroke.

I always only do one “wet” stroke, then do 3-4 “dry” strokes very slowly. A “dry” stroke is where you are pulling the cleaner backwards toward you to suck up as much water as you can. I pull on the “dry” strokes.

Now, if I have a particularly dirty area, I will go back over that area again, making sure to do plenty of dry strokes to pick up as much water as I can.

After I do my “dry” strokes, my carpet is just ever so slightly damp. That is what you want. With the air conditioning or furnace on and the ceiling fan on, my carpets are usually completely dry within 30-60 minutes.

Another trick to get really clean carpets, especially if it’s been awhile since they have been cleaned, is to do cross strokes. In the room, you will make your strokes all one direction, like vertical strokes, then when the entire room is done, you go back to the area where you first started, but this time you will do horizontal strokes. Using cross strokes this way assures the carpet fibers are being cleaned on all sides.

What do I use for cleaning solution?

I do not like the “perfumy” smell of many carpet cleaning detergents. They are full of toxic chemicals that can cause serious respiratory problems like allergies and asthma and they are toxic to the environment.

If you have a baby crawling around on the carpet, what you use to clean that carpet with will come in contact with your baby’s skin and your baby will be breathing up those chemicals. Are you sure you want your little one to be breathing up all those toxic chemicals? Babies’ lungs are still developing and when you expose them to toxic chemicals, you risk permanently damaging their lungs. It’s the same with pets.

What I use is a mixture of Shaklee’s Basic-H and Basic-G. The Basic-Hwill clean the carpets and the Basic-G, which is also a cleaner, will help deodorize them.

Be very careful how much Basic-H you use! A little goes a long way. In my cleaner, the clean storage tank holds approximately a gallon of water. I only pour in about a tablespoon of Basic-H and about two tablespoons ofBasic-G. You will have to adjust accordingly to your cleaner. Remember, it is better to use too little than too much. The Basic-H is so concentrated, if you use too much it will add too many suds to your carpet.

These two products together do an amazing job of cleaning and brightening your carpets and they are safe for your family and the environment! They are also extremely concentrated and cost much less than the toxic store brands!

Always add the water to the tank first, then add the cleaning solution. Also, if you need to fill up your tank again because you have a large area you are cleaning, be sure to rinse out any remaining cleaning solution before adding more. This will keep you from having too much cleaning solution in your tank and risk getting too much of it on your carpets.

Cleaning carpets effectively may take a few times till you get the hang of it, but once you do, you will love having clean carpets that cost just a fraction of the cost of paying a carpet cleaning company to do it!

Do you have any carpet cleaning tips you want to share? Be sure to share your tips with us!

For All Parents Who Have Children Going to School for the First Time

Letters to Your Children

Do you write letters to your children?

I do and I’ll tell you why. My child is only six, but I have been writing to him since he was two. I wished I had started earlier, but I never thought about it.

Now, he of course, doesn’t read them, they are for later when he is older or if something happens to me. I want him to know what I was thinking and feeling at the time. So often when we are older our memories aren’t what they used to be so I think writing them letters at the time is a great way to preserve the memories.

I don’t write him one every day, more like just once or twice a year, like on the first day of school, birthdays, etc. You know, special occasions. If he did something particularly funny or special I may write one then.

I keep them in a folder in a filing cabinet and it is fun to pull them out and read them now and then. It also helps me experience my feelings in a more positive way. Like how hard it is to let them go when they first start school and you have to watch them ride away on that big yellow school bus. Writing those thoughts and feelings down right then is good for your spirit and your child will get a glimpse into how you were when they were little and how much you truly loved them.

Writing them letters now is a precious gift you can give to them later. My mother died when I was young and I would give almost anything to have a letter from her or a diary or something. Now that I am a mom, I would love to see how she felt about things while her children were young – to see the real her.

So give your children a gift they will appreciate when they are older and are parents themselves. I know they will thank you for it.

April 2014 Newsletter

Welcome to our Celebrating Earth Day April 2014 Newsletter!

Shaklee has always celebrated Earth Day everyday and we are always excited to share how much the Environment means to us.

Home should be the safest, healthiest place in the whole world. But, today’s insulated air-tight homes are filled with chemicals that have never been tested for human toxicity - in the air, the walls, carpets, and in the household cleaners, which can carry some pretty scary warning labels.

Below is some information on how cleaning products affect you, your children and your environment. See how these products affect you, what the EPA and what pediatricians have to say.

  • 81,000 chemicals have been registered with the EPA in the past 30 years and fewer than 20% have been tested for toxicity.
  • 90% of all poison exposures occur in the home.
  • 90% of our time is spent indoors. EPA reports that air pollution is up to 5 times higher inside than outside.
  • EPA studies have shown that elevated concentration of household chemicals persist in the air. Long term exposure to chemicals inside our homes may be harmful to us and our families.
  • One out of every 13 children have asthma.
  • Common household cleaners give off fumes that can increase the risk of children developing asthma.
  • The average U.S. household generates more than 20 pounds of hazardous waste each year.

What’s in your cleaners?

Sodium Hydroxide – Inhalation is immediately irritating to the respiratory tract. Contact can cause severe damage to the eyes, skin, mouth and throat. Can cause liver and kidney damage.
May be found in:

  • Dishwashing liquids
  • Laundry products
  • Oven cleaners
  • Scouring cleansers
  • Tub & tile cleaners

Hydrochloric Acid – Can cause severe damage to the skin. Can be harmful to health if inhaled. Can be fatal if swallowed.
May be found in:
