If you are expecting this site to show a person whose house is spotless, with homemade meals and desert made from scratch on the table every night, the laundry always caught up, my kid always acting perfect and handmade gifts given for every holiday, then you’ve landed on the wrong site.

If you are NOT like the person mentioned above and you want to come hang out with someone who isn’t a Supermom either, then you’ve come to the right place.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Recipes

I hope everyone and their little goblins have a great time. I also wish you all great weather for trick-or-treating.

I’m sure you already know what you plan to do tonight and how to keep your child safe, but here are a few tips that I'm repeating.

- Pre-feed your children (and yourself!) to help prevent overeating of the candy. It’s easy to overeat the candy when you are hungry. Full bellies of wholesome food will help curb the urge to munch between houses and gorging once home.

- Make sure the costumes are safe and your child has a light on them somewhere such as a flashlight, reflective tape or one of those cool glowing wristbands or necklaces. Kids tend to dart across streets without looking when they are with their friends and are excited. Also, remember the masks we wore as kids? You couldn’t see very well, they were hot and you had to lift them every so often so you could breathe. If you remember how uncomfortable that was, then don’t let your kid wear one that he can’t easily breathe through or see through.

- Go with your kids, don’t let them go alone or just with friends. It not only helps keep them safe it is fun to watch, too! Ask them what they got every time they leave a house and try to keep a mental note of what they got where, just in case there’s a problem with a candy later. Keep to neighborhoods where you know the people and there is no need to hit a hundred houses. A few places usually lands you enough loot to last.

- Of course, every parent checks the candy. You’re looking for the obvious open candy, but make sure you actually pick up and closely inspect every piece, no exceptions. Hearing of hypodermic needles injecting candy is a scary thought, that is why you need to stick to going to people you know and trust. Most malls, some libraries and other places that are kid friendly often have trick-or-treating if you don’t want to hit the streets.

- Make sure your munchkins don’t munch out too much on the sweet stuff. You know how bad the tummy aches can get and how the sugar overdose affects their mood. There are many options – you could give them a few cents for each piece of candy up to half of the loot; allow only so many pieces to be eaten a day in exchange for desert; bring the extra to work with you (your co-workers will hate you for it, but they’ll get over it); save it for a month and pass it out at the next game or activity your kid attends, etc. You get the idea.

- The most important tip is to relax, have fun and take lots of pictures to embarrass them later when they’re older!

Have Fun!!

Picking the Right Torque Converter

By Don Terrill (c) RacingSecrets.com

What needs to be decided and in what order:

1. Converter Size - This is physical size of the converter - the outside diameter. Choose too small and you'll end up with too much stall. Choose too large and you'll end up with too little stall or a converter that's very inefficient (high % of slippage).
2. Stator - A one-way clutch that creates torque multiplication. It's about half the diameter of the entire converter and located right in the middle. The stator decision will set many of the converter's characteristics.
3. Fin Angle - Placed towards the outside of the converter, these fins can be bent to fine-tune the stall speed of the converter. Radical changes in fin angle may point to the need for a different stator or maybe even a different size converter.

Questions that need to be answered:

1. Desired Stall Speed

2. Engines Torque Curve

3. Weight of Car

4. Transmission First Gear Ratio

5. Rear-End Ratio

Converter Nazis - Be warned, converter companies may not be thrilled with your request to pick your own specs. Here's a conversation I had with torque converter company in Indiana - I'm dying to name the company, but I'll restrain myself. I called to order a custom converter and was prepared to give what size, stator and fin angle I wanted - I was asked what made me think I knew more about converters than they did? I asked what made them think they knew more about my car than I did? Smart response? Guess not, they refused my request for a converter - "No Converter for You!!!" -What jar-heads.

How did I know what specs. I needed? I had a lot of experience with their converters and knowledge of their coding system for stators and fin angles - I also knew what a change to either would do to stall speed and efficiency. How? A long talk with one of the guys in their shop.

Advice for the torque converter industry - Print stator and fin angle specs in your catalog. Then explain the characteristics for each. It's the smartest thing Comp Cams ever did - listing cam lobe specs in the back oftheir catalog. We need a Comp Cams for the converter industry.

Freshen-up warning: Sending in a perfectly good converter for freshen-up can be risky - even if you don't request a stall speed change. If internal clearances are altered while welding the converter back together, the stall characteristics can change. Like I've always said about carburetors, if you've got a good one, don't turn it loose.

Summary:

1. Work with only one converter company

2. Let them pick your first few converters

3. Learn about their converters, stators, fin angles, etc.

4. Start picking your own converter specs

More technical tips:

http://racingsecrets.com/

http://speedtalk.com/store.html

My Notes: Talk to racers whose cars are very consistent. Find out what brand of converter they use and why. Then find out who services them if done locally. We have someone we use locally who will cut open the converter, show you the inside, discuss with you the options and if time allows, do it right then. He will then weld it up and you can take it home with you. This is of course depending on how busy he is. It is quite interesting when you blow a converter to see the damage inside. Visually seeing it can help you understand how it all works better.

ENGINE TIPS:Picking the Right Carburetor

By: Don Terrill (c) from Racingsecrets.com

Comparing carburetors by their manufacturer's cfm ratings is the number one mistake racers make when picking a carburetor. In the old days it was easy -Holley was the only game in town. Today, with more competition has come more methods for rating carburetor air flow - It has become very hard to compare apples to apples.

I recommend that you don't even look at CFM numbers.

What needs to be decided and in what order:
1. Air Flow Path Dimensions - Venturi and Throttle Plate diameters
2. Type/Series - 4150, 4500 (Dominator), etc
3. Manufacturer - Holley, Barry Grant, etc
4. Linkage Style - Progressive, vacuum, 1:1, etc
5. Booster Style - Down Leg, Annular Discharge, etc

Number one on that list is by far the most important decision you will make.

Questions that need to be answered:
1. Engine Size - More cubic inches = more cfm (size)required.
2. RPM - More rpm = more cfm (size) required.
3. Application - Racing on limited tires and need to kill some lowend? Try a larger carburetor. Got'er hooked and need some more lowend? You got it, try a smaller carb.

Never, and I mean never: Loan or get rid of a good carburetor. They all have their own personality and some are just better than others.

My notes: I agree with the never get rid of any carburetor comment. I did once. I let go of a decent carburetor because it didn’t work for my current application. I now wish I had it back as it might work for my current setup. Sigh.

Guest Post - Invitation to Friendship

Here is a guest post By Mary Steinke

"Would you like to have a cup of coffee?"

Almost twenty years ago, that simple invitation began a wonderful friendship. Both of us were new, first-time moms with brand new babies and new in town. Her invitation brought a ray of hope into my life. Maybe, at last, I had found a friend.

Having been a navy wife, I knew the value of making new friends in new places. Yet somehow, once my first child was born, it seemed all the rules changed. Making and maintaining friends takes energy and time--both very limited commodities to first-time moms. I desperately needed a friend, but I had no idea how to find one in a strange town where I spent hour upon hour alone with my baby in a perpetual, sleep-deprivation stupor.

Isolation tends to breed insecurity. And believe me, at the time, I was a jumbling mass of isolated insecurities. In addition, I felt unsure of my new role as a mother who chose to stay at home. When I worked full-time, I had always socialized with my co-workers. Once I started to work at home, I knew there had to be other moms out there somewhere, but I had no idea how to find them.

So what's a mom to do? Do what businesses do. Network! Either you can network individually with moms who choose to remain or network through mom's groups or you can do both.

Individual networking

Probably the best place to meet other moms is at activities which involve your children. Put yourself in places where the moms tend to congregate. Use proximity to build your friendship base.

Try any or all of these ways to meet a mom who may also be looking for a friend:
-Sign up for story time at the library
-Walk with your baby at the mall
-Arrange for your child to take swim/dance/gymnastic lessons during the day
-Offer to treat one of your children's preschool playmates and their mom to lunch at McDonalds -Begin a play group or baby sitting co-op in your neighborhood or church
-Volunteer at your children's school

Then, just start up a conversation about how much your child enjoys that particular activity. Over time, you will be able to sense who will be a soul mate or who will be a friend you greet in the grocery store. Both kinds of friends are invaluable to help you feel connected to this community.

Group networking

Or choose to make friends in a group setting. A good place to find out about local groups is to contact local churches.

Regardless of where you meet another mom, you need to make a special invitation in order to make a friend. Invite her for coffee. Or invite her and her children to join you at the park, an indoor play area, or a children's museum.

Remember making friends takes time. It usually doesn't happen during a passing conversation. However, be assured that she probably needs you in her life as much as you need her.

Finally, pray to find a friend. Every time I moved, I prayed for a friend. Each time I was blessed with an answer to that prayer. Sometimes, it seemed like it took forever, but eventually I always found a soul mate as well as many other friends whose presence adds depth and dimension to my life. Remember, all it takes is a prayer, a special invitation and a little bit of time to make a friend.

About the Author:
Mary Steinke writes a newspaper column, speaks to moms through the Midwest, leads Bible study groups, and loves the five males in her family - her husband, Harry, their three sons, and the family's miniature dachshund. Mary lives in Normal, Illinois.

My note: I know how isolated it can get especially if the weather isn't so grand. It can be hard making new friends especially those you have something in common with. These are all good ideas. I also recommend finding a local web based community where you can meet up with local moms in your area. Just do a search for local mom groups and your city name and see what pops up.

NHRA Mobile Launched

The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has recently launched “NHRA Mobile”, a mobile application that will bring live racing action from all 24 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events into the mobile devices of NHRA fans’ hands.

NHRA Mobile will be anchored by the live timing and scoring that will give fans access to real-time results, news, blogs, track overviews, race schedules, team reports, points standings, and more.

This is great for those who like to use their mobile phones for keeping up to date on the latest. Young people especially seem to be the largest group that do this. In fact, recent surveys identify NHRA as having one of the youngest fan bases among major sports properties in the United States.

If you like to keep up with the latest on NHRA racing on your mobile device, then click here:

Can You Jump Rope Like This?

This has GOT to be one of THE most impressive thing I have ever seen.
These girls are amazing!
We used to jump rope in school and did the double rope, slap the ground and pick up sticks - stuff like that. Others would stop and watch like they were impressed, but wow, these girls are so incredible. And some are so young, too.
Enjoy!

I'll show you how I track tuned at Winston Cup races. On the same subject I also include the Weather Dyno software to help you.

Engine Builder - Ok, I know you are going to be the hardest to convince. I know that all engine builders have pride, I have pride too, but remember that we all came out of the womb knowing nothing about engine building, we had to learn it from someone. Life As A Car Girl – I Was Born Loving Cars

Having six older brothers definitely helped, but they really aren’t into cars that much. In fact out of six boys and one girl, guess who is the one that races cars?

When I was a little girl the two toys I enjoyed playing with the most weren’t dolls and tea sets, they were horse statues and cars. I grew up loving horses which will be a different story for another time, but I also grew up loving cars. I had a few Hot Wheels and Matchboxes that I wish I still had today. I only had a few and I am assuming they were the cast offs that my brothers didn’t want. I didn’t mind though, I had my own cars to play with. I also would “borrow” my older brothers’ cars to play with at times, which would always end up with me getting shoved aside as my brothers would come and re-claim their cars. I would scream, mom would yell wanting to know what’s going on, my brother would exclaim that I was taking his stuff again and in the end we all ended up in tears and in trouble. I was planning on giving them back. I was!

I would have to say that my very favorite toy though was the combination of horses and cars. One Christmas, I received a pickup truck that was pulling a horse trailer with two horses inside. I loved it! It combined both worlds perfectly. I could unhitch the trailer from the truck, take the horses out of the trailer, haul stuff in the back of the truck – it was great! I really miss that toy now. I know I would still play with it today if I could find one like it.

My poor mother. She tried desperately to get her only girl to wear dresses and play with dolls. Fights always ensued between her and I over her wanting me to wear dresses, to act more ladylike and me wanting to be, well, myself. I can’t imagine the money that was wasted on dolls and tea set and dresses that were either never played with or would end up being a sacrifice for some experiment my brothers and I would dream up. Barbie wants to be an astronaut? Then she should be duct taped to some bottle rockets!

I wasn’t the only girl around who wanted a Barbie Corvette, but I was the only girl around who wanted it with more horsepower options, a five speed, a tow package to haul horses of course, and I did not want it in pink! I thought only sissy girls drove pink cars! Pink has never been and still isn’t my color. To say the least, I never got my Barbie Corvette. I guess my mom knew that the Ken doll would never get to drive and she didn’t want to be responsible for me learning how to be the next Evel Kneviel on four wheels.

Her distaste for me being a tomboy was a little hypocritical of her though, now that I think of it. After all, she is where I get my love of racing from! She was the fastest driver I have ever ridden with and I know my family would back me up on this. She only liked to drive the big V8’s and she had only one speed – fast! My father bought her a nice V6 smaller car once. He thought she would like it better because it was cheaper on gas, smaller and easier to maneuver, which would have made her commute to work downtown easier. After she drove it one day, she came back and threw the keys to him and said she wanted her old car back as this little thing didn’t have any power. She was horrible on gas mileage. She would floor it when the light turned green, pass other cars like she was heading for the finish at the Indy 500 and then slam on the brakes and slide to a stop when the light turned red. If the eggs survived on the way home from the store, it was a miracle.

Shirley Muldowney had nothing on my mom. I know Mom would have put her on the trailer in a heartbeat. All you would have had to do is hold up a sign at the end of the track that said “SALE” in big letters and you wouldn’t have beaten her to it.

We lost my mom to cancer when I was nine, but I am thankful for these fond memories I have. All that work at trying to get me to be more ladylike did stick and I can only hope to be half of the lady she was. So thanks, Mom for passing on your love of speed. Like a true lady, I always check how my makeup looks in the mirror before I put on my helmet to race.

The New Buzz Word – “On Sale”

The newest buzz word is “On Sale”. It’s the latest thing to be “In to”. I read an article about how America is on sale. Click here to read it. It talks about how due to the recession, this is a great time for consumers. If you have the money to spend, now is a great time to find bargains. Have you noticed the lower prices on things? And I’m not just talking about groceries. Everything seems to be on sale anymore. Signs stating lower prices are everywhere and the bid to get you to shop with online companies is at an all time high. Stores, both online and the traditional brick and mortar are trying to lure you in with lower prices, free shipping or more time to pay off. They are in fierce battles with each other for your hard earned dollar. It really is a good time to be a consumer.

Who wins from these battles? We, the consumers do! These companies’ sales are down so low they have to start offering lower prices and other bargains in the hope to make the difference up in volume. This is good news for us. Like to haggle on price? You now have more leverage to do that with the higher priced items as the store knows you are price checking other places. They know you are not afraid to shop and ultimately “spend” somewhere else.

It wasn’t all that long ago that someone strolling through the mall with an arm load of designer name shopping bags was a common sight. Now if you see someone doing that you tend to think that they are either a shopaholic being careless with their money, or they are very rich and the bad economy hasn’t affected them as bad as it did you. Either way, you may unconsciously not look too favorably on that person, judgmental as that may be. We have gone back to the ideas of our parents and grandparents, the ones that lived through the Great Depression. Being frugal is not only smart, but expected. Being smart with your money, spending wisely and saving as much as you can is the new norm. No longer is keeping up with the Jones’s an accepted way of living by today’s society. Want to be in with the “In Crowd”? Then you better learn to budget and cut way back.

When I went to Biggs last week to take advantage of their triple coupon days I saw more people walking around with fists full of coupons than I normally do on a regular shopping trip. Though I am seeing a few more people in general with coupons there are still many who don’t. Even with money as tight as it is, there are still many people who find shopping with coupons and only combining them with sales too tedious. That’s too bad because they are really missing out on some major savings. Those who do not do their homework before buying anything are now considered to be the foolish ones and are looked at with bewilderment by the rest of us. It wasn’t all that long ago that an abnormally frugal person was looked at with the same bewilderment. Funny how the tables have turned.

I highly recommend spending some time learning how to be more frugal. There isn’t a lack of information on how to do that. All you have to do is look. Talk to those who have lived the through the Great Depression. They have great stories to tell how communities, neighbors, family and friends all helped each other and how they were able to get through by spending wisely. I also highly recommend finding someone who is frugal and asking them what methods they use. Most will be happy to share their secrets. They really aren’t secrets at all.

So if you want to be popular you can win the lottery and “share” or you can learn how to save, spend wisely and share those methods with others so they can learn to do the same. See a great bargain? Share it with others and watch how “popular” you become. Saving money is “In”, spending foolishly is definitely “Out”.
