He May Be The Next Track Announcer

My 2 year old son just loves cars. I mean he loves cars like no one else I have known. He will play with the track his daddy built for him all day long if you let him.

Above is a picture of him watching the races from the tower. It was cold and windy that day and since we are privileged enough to have access to the tower we decided to watch from up there.

The announcer is only a few feet away announcing the races into the microphone. My son decided he wanted to announce too. Being 2 years old and a self proclaimed expert he was adding his own narrative. He would loudly scream blue dragster, red dragster! Then when a blue ’63 vette and a red ’63 vette happen to meet on the line he got so excited his voice raised 2 octaves! He started screaming, jumping up and down and pointing. He kept repeating, “The King, Pachow!” over and over. The King and Pachow (his name he gives to the character Lightening McQueen) are his favorite cartoon characters from the movie CARS. This is his favorite movie and he begs to see it all the time. I have to admit it’s one of my favorites too and even though we’ve seen it a 100 times, I still find something new I never saw before.

Anyway, I feared his screaming and announcing could be heard over the microphone and out to the track. Add to it the laughter coming from the track announcer and other staff making it hard for him to call the races certainly made for an entertaining race day. But much to the dismay of my son I thought it best we vacate the tower before the track owner got annoyed.

I’m sure his displeasure could be heard throughout the land as I was dragging him out kicking and screaming. He stopped being upset when I told him we would watch the races from the van.

What was nice was the track announcer said he could come back and help him “announce” anytime he wanted. I could still hear their chuckles as we made our way down the steps. Though I was a bit embarrassed, at least we were entertaining.

Though it was hard to get him to leave, I am very proud of my little “gearhead.”

This is a quote I had hanging over my desk at work and it surprisingly made quite an impact. When a situation came up that this applied to, where someone wanted me to fix their mistake of lack of planning by insisting I drop everything I had to do to fix it for them. All I had to do is point to the sign and many understood and learned to do their job themselves....or found some other sucker to do it.

Saved Big at the Grocery!

I love saving money especially when it comes to food.
Today I saved over $45.00.
My grocery bill for this week is $50.67 which is my goal. Not too bad. There are some coupon queens out there who may have scored better than I did, but I think $50.00 for the week is a pretty good grocery bill.

I did forget one thing - celery, but I think we can live without it this week.
I have more than enough food for the week and stocked up on things that were on sale and I had coupons for.

Unfortunately Meiers only accepts two of the same coupons, but I was able to stack manufacturer coupons on top of their store coupons that you can print off of their website.
I would have bought more, but since this store only accepts 2 of the same coupon, I was limited. I could make a second trip, but who has time for that?
I also don't have an extra freezer to store food so I am limited on space.

Savings = 30.96!
That is just on these items alone. I did buy other grocery items also on sale and also with coupons, but I just wanted to highlight some of the really good deals.

The only things I bought that I didn't have coupons for were strawberries and lettuce.
Notice that these are high quality name brand items. Though I often get store brands, sometimes if you wait for the best sale and combine them with the use of coupons you can actually get the name brand cheaper than the store brand!

Sometimes You Just Have to Let Them Watch TV!

I know, I know, letting little ones watch too much TV is a no no, but sometimes the TV is a life saver. When you have things that need to get done, like writing articles, and you have a cranky toddler, sometimes you just have to use what tools are available to you. If sticking in a video or letting them watch some PBS shows are the tools you use, then so be it.

Does it make me a bad mom because sometimes I do this? I don’t think so. It’s not like I feed him chicken nuggets and let him veg out in front the TV every day. Just now and then. Some days we don’t watch TV at all. There are just days when it’s rainy or cold outside, I have a lot of work to catch up on and I need that extra help. Though he may not watch TV all day, I have been known to let him watch more than the recommended 2 hours.

I also encourage self play with his cars, toys or coloring. Play dough on the kitchen table buys me a good 20 minutes and the mess is minimal. I also stop for short moments to read him a book or play a short time with him which is enough to satisfy his constantly needing mom requests.

I think many children nowadays that have every second scheduled for them, don’t know how to play on their own or how to entertain themselves. As a parent, always being the activities director for your children may end up hurting them as they get older if they don’t know how to play by themselves. Not knowing how to entertain themselves as a kid, I believe can cause all kinds of problems as they get older. You don’t want to end up with a child who constantly needs you or others to be with him or to entertain him.

So, again, it’s not like I leave him to his own devices or let him sit like a zombie in front of the TV all day every day. More like an occasional day to just chill. Sometimes I’m right there next to him watching the tube. Snuggling on the couch, eating popcorn for lunch, taking a nap together and just hanging out is just what you may need to recharge.

We all lead stressful, hectic lives and spending some down time with your kids can be fun and will make them feel important enough because you took time out of your busy schedule to spend it with them. Even if you are doing relatively nothing, you are doing it together and that can mean the world to a child. I challenge any so called, “expert” to prove to me that chilling every now and then with your child is bad for you or makes you a bad parent.

Time to go. My favorite part of the movie is coming up.

I Received My $38.00 in Infant Tylenol Refund

I just received my check for $38.00 for the Infant Tylenol, Infant Motrin and Children’s Benadryl products that were recalled. Did you?

Since I stock up when on sale and with coupons, I had a few bottles to report. Now I don’t have any pain relief for my little one if he were to need it and since my confidence is shaken in Tylenol, I’m not sure when I will buy it next. That and I would like to see it go on sale and have some coupons to go with it of course.

Scary when you read why they recalled it. I had already given my son some and was glad he had no adverse reactions to it. So be sure to check your product before giving it to your child.

I Managed To Let It Go

Last Saturday started out like a typical Saturday around our house. It’s race day and this time it was my turn. Because of our little one we only race one car at a time.

We decided to try a new transbrake button in my car to help me with the red lights. It was a longer button mounted on the floor next to the shifter. The idea was to help slow my very fast reaction times down, allowing me to leave off the flash instead of having to hold back on the tree.

My husband loaded everything for me which I greatly appreciate. Though I know he is trying to help, I also know he would rather do the work than be inside watching the munchkin.

As usual, when I haven’t been in the car for awhile I start to get a defeatist attitude which makes me not want to go as much as I do want to go. Have you ever felt that way? Where you really want to go, but feel like you are so rusty that it it’s a waste of money and time because you feel you won’t be competitive? That’s how I was feeling. This race was a more expensive race to enter and with the larger payout meant that better racers would be there. I felt defeated before I had even left the house.

This attitude starts to poison your whole outlook on everything, ultimately making you a rather unpleasant person to be around. I felt so awful in my head I even wanted to get away from myself. This of course started to cause little arguments to pop up between my husband and myself. He wasn’t feeling very positive either and was in a bad mood to begin with himself. Well, we clashed like two thunderstorms. He said something to me that was really awful and mean and rather than lose it, I just got in the truck and took off with race car in tow.

I never like to leave like that or let someone I love leave like that as I know how precious life is and how someone you love can be taken away from you in an accident to where you never see them again. So for me to leave like that was very significant since I never like to do that. Well, after gunning it up the street I realized I forgot my cell phone. Shoot! OK, I didn’t say “shoot”, but I try and keep this G rated. So I had to find a place to turn around and head back. It was so embarrassing. I stormed in, picked up my phone and left without saying a word.

All the way to the track I was plotting my escape from the marriage. Feeling like I no longer wanted to be married to such a heartless man, tired of the put downs he says in anger and frustration and forgetting all the wonderful things he does for me.

When I got to the track I focused on getting my car ready, but wouldn’t you know it, it wouldn’t idle for me. That figures. With some help from a fellow racer we got the hood off and managed to straighten it out. Being the good friend, he knew I wasn’t feeling “right”, so he called my husband and told him the trouble I was having with the car. He was there in no time.

When I saw him and my little man, all was forgotten. We were so relieved to see each other and happy that we just let our previous feelings fall by the wayside. He was my husband, we have a little one who is healthy, we were doing what we love and that’s all that matters.

The race didn’t go as planned, I went out in third round by breaking out by .001 and the button made my lights way too late. It even stuck once! Though things didn’t go as planned racing wise, we enjoyed some nice time sitting and eating our picnic dinner he packed, playing with our son and visiting with friends.

At the end of the night we were best friends again and nothing was ever mentioned of our fight and my departure. Sometimes it is best not to over-talk matters. Sometimes it is best to just let things go. Marriage can be a hard partnership to be in especially when we are feeling “off”. Love is what allows you to let it go and go on loving the person you fell in love with.

Lesson learned.
