Solitude

As a busy mom of a toddler who drag races (I race, not my toddler – just in case you needed that clarified - LOL) along with my husband who races, having time to myself is well, almost non-existent. I don’t even get much time alone in the bathroom! You can read my humorous post on that called,
Things I Miss Now That My Baby Is A Toddler.

A recent article written on solitude talks about so many Americans have so little time alone. That is probably why carpooling never really caught on in this country. So many of us relish that time we have alone. Our lives are packed with so many people demanding our attention that the drive alone is our only source of solitude.

Still, solitude is very much needed in order to collect ourselves, to de-stress and to go inward to do some deep thinking. We need this time to ourselves for deep thought in order to work out solutions to our problems, to reflect on our blessings and to straighten things out in our head sometimes. We have so much going on in our lives today that it can get all jumbled. That can make us feel like we have lost control of our lives. Going inward and thinking deeply can help us sort through the mess and allow us to prioritize our thoughts. We can throw out what is not important and decide what is. In order to do this though, we need some quiet time alone.

If you don’t think you can find time to do this, try some creative thinking. If you can’t seem to work in long periods of time alone, try short bursts. Schedule it in if you have to, but remain flexible if your schedule changes frequently. Start with your drive in the car. If you always seem to be hauling someone then try and see if you can get someone to watch the kids and go to the grocery by yourself. You have to go to the grocery anyway, but the drive alone to and from the store is what you are looking for. When driving, try driving without the radio on for a change. It’s amazing how much thinking you can do while driving if it’s quiet. Just be sure to still stay alert to traffic and no talking on the phone!

Try to steal a few minutes to yourself after dinner. Proper digestion is crucial to health and running into the next task right after dinner is not good for your digestion. If family won’t allow you to just sit and relax then think of a task you can do that no one else wants to do. One task is doing the dishes. If people are constantly coming into the kitchen to ask you questions or whatever, threaten everyone that whoever comes into the kitchen will have to do the dishes! This threat works well when you want some time alone. Folding laundry is another one. They are tasks that don’t require a lot of concentration to do therefore allowing you the opportunity to be alone to think.

Spend five minutes of your lunchtime at work sitting still with your eyes closed. Try and find a place where you’ll be alone even if it means sitting in your car! If that won’t work or you enjoy your lunch time by socializing with your coworkers, then try and get to work 10 minutes earlier and just sit and meditate about your day ahead. You’ll be amazed at how much more centered and calm you will be during the day.

Try and set your alarm for five to ten minutes earlier and find a quiet place to sit and think. If you think you just can’t get up any earlier than you already do then take those five or ten minutes in the evening to yourself. Instead of dashing around after the kids go to bed trying to straighten the house spend that time to straighten your mind. You deserve that time alone to think about your day and deflate.

After doing this for a while you will get very good and efficient with your thinking time. This will allow you more time to learn how to become quiet in your mind as well. Meditation - where you think of nothing is also something that both our minds and bodies need. You will find that you can sort things out your mind quickly allowing you time to sit and meditate which allows you to empty your mind. Emptying your mind will help solutions to problems you have to come to you more easily and is one of the best ways to beat stress. I highly recommend learning how to meditate. It takes a little practice, but when you get the hang of it, it really can change your life.

Taking time alone helps us to be better parents, better spouses, better workers and overall happier in our lives. Solitude is required for our sanity and our happiness. Insist on it, make time for it and respect others need for it as well. You’ll find it recharges you and calms you all at the same time. Now that is multitasking!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Recipes

I hope everyone and their little goblins have a great time. I also wish you all great weather for trick-or-treating.

I’m sure you already know what you plan to do tonight and how to keep your child safe, but here are a few tips that I'm repeating.

- Pre-feed your children (and yourself!) to help prevent overeating of the candy. It’s easy to overeat the candy when you are hungry. Full bellies of wholesome food will help curb the urge to munch between houses and gorging once home.

- Make sure the costumes are safe and your child has a light on them somewhere such as a flashlight, reflective tape or one of those cool glowing wristbands or necklaces. Kids tend to dart across streets without looking when they are with their friends and are excited. Also, remember the masks we wore as kids? You couldn’t see very well, they were hot and you had to lift them every so often so you could breathe. If you remember how uncomfortable that was, then don’t let your kid wear one that he can’t easily breathe through or see through.

- Go with your kids, don’t let them go alone or just with friends. It not only helps keep them safe it is fun to watch, too! Ask them what they got every time they leave a house and try to keep a mental note of what they got where, just in case there’s a problem with a candy later. Keep to neighborhoods where you know the people and there is no need to hit a hundred houses. A few places usually lands you enough loot to last.

- Of course, every parent checks the candy. You’re looking for the obvious open candy, but make sure you actually pick up and closely inspect every piece, no exceptions. Hearing of hypodermic needles injecting candy is a scary thought, that is why you need to stick to going to people you know and trust. Most malls, some libraries and other places that are kid friendly often have trick-or-treating if you don’t want to hit the streets.

- Make sure your munchkins don’t munch out too much on the sweet stuff. You know how bad the tummy aches can get and how the sugar overdose affects their mood. There are many options – you could give them a few cents for each piece of candy up to half of the loot; allow only so many pieces to be eaten a day in exchange for desert; bring the extra to work with you (your co-workers will hate you for it, but they’ll get over it); save it for a month and pass it out at the next game or activity your kid attends, etc. You get the idea.

- The most important tip is to relax, have fun and take lots of pictures to embarrass them later when they’re older!

Have Fun!!

Picking the Right Torque Converter

By Don Terrill (c) RacingSecrets.com

What needs to be decided and in what order:

1. Converter Size - This is physical size of the converter - the outside diameter. Choose too small and you'll end up with too much stall. Choose too large and you'll end up with too little stall or a converter that's very inefficient (high % of slippage).
2. Stator - A one-way clutch that creates torque multiplication. It's about half the diameter of the entire converter and located right in the middle. The stator decision will set many of the converter's characteristics.
3. Fin Angle - Placed towards the outside of the converter, these fins can be bent to fine-tune the stall speed of the converter. Radical changes in fin angle may point to the need for a different stator or maybe even a different size converter.

Questions that need to be answered:

1. Desired Stall Speed

2. Engines Torque Curve

3. Weight of Car

4. Transmission First Gear Ratio

5. Rear-End Ratio

Converter Nazis - Be warned, converter companies may not be thrilled with your request to pick your own specs. Here's a conversation I had with torque converter company in Indiana - I'm dying to name the company, but I'll restrain myself. I called to order a custom converter and was prepared to give what size, stator and fin angle I wanted - I was asked what made me think I knew more about converters than they did? I asked what made them think they knew more about my car than I did? Smart response? Guess not, they refused my request for a converter - "No Converter for You!!!" -What jar-heads.

How did I know what specs. I needed? I had a lot of experience with their converters and knowledge of their coding system for stators and fin angles - I also knew what a change to either would do to stall speed and efficiency. How? A long talk with one of the guys in their shop.

Advice for the torque converter industry - Print stator and fin angle specs in your catalog. Then explain the characteristics for each. It's the smartest thing Comp Cams ever did - listing cam lobe specs in the back oftheir catalog. We need a Comp Cams for the converter industry.

Freshen-up warning: Sending in a perfectly good converter for freshen-up can be risky - even if you don't request a stall speed change. If internal clearances are altered while welding the converter back together, the stall characteristics can change. Like I've always said about carburetors, if you've got a good one, don't turn it loose.

Summary:

1. Work with only one converter company

2. Let them pick your first few converters

3. Learn about their converters, stators, fin angles, etc.

4. Start picking your own converter specs

My Notes: Talk to racers whose cars are very consistent. Find out what brand of converter they use and why. Then find out who services them if done locally. We have someone we use locally who will cut open the converter, show you the inside, discuss with you the options and if time allows, do it right then. He will then weld it up and you can take it home with you. This is of course depending on how busy he is. It is quite interesting when you blow a converter to see the damage inside. Visually seeing it can help you understand how it all works better.

ENGINE TIPS:Picking the Right Carburetor

By: Don Terrill (c) from Racingsecrets.com

Comparing carburetors by their manufacturer's cfm ratings is the number one mistake racers make when picking a carburetor. In the old days it was easy -Holley was the only game in town. Today, with more competition has come more methods for rating carburetor air flow - It has become very hard to compare apples to apples.

I recommend that you don't even look at CFM numbers.

What needs to be decided and in what order:
1. Air Flow Path Dimensions - Venturi and Throttle Plate diameters
2. Type/Series - 4150, 4500 (Dominator), etc
3. Manufacturer - Holley, Barry Grant, etc
4. Linkage Style - Progressive, vacuum, 1:1, etc
5. Booster Style - Down Leg, Annular Discharge, etc

Number one on that list is by far the most important decision you will make.

Questions that need to be answered:
1. Engine Size - More cubic inches = more cfm (size)required.
2. RPM - More rpm = more cfm (size) required.
3. Application - Racing on limited tires and need to kill some lowend? Try a larger carburetor. Got'er hooked and need some more lowend? You got it, try a smaller carb.

Never, and I mean never: Loan or get rid of a good carburetor. They all have their own personality and some are just better than others.

My notes: I agree with the never get rid of any carburetor comment. I did once. I let go of a decent carburetor because it didn’t work for my current application. I now wish I had it back as it might work for my current setup. Sigh.
