Planting Seeds is Believing in the Future

When you plant seeds in dirt, you believe in the future. Whether it’s a few flower seeds in a kitchen window or a thousand acre farm, the act of planting seeds shows that you have faith in what is yet to come.

It can be hard to believe in a good future and keep in faith sometimes, especially with all that is going on in the world, but since humans first learned to plant seeds, they learned to hope and to believe in something they can’t see.

As spring rolls around we are planting seeds in our little “greenhouses” (see below to what we use as greenhouses) and as we wait and watch my son is learning the important lesson of having faith in something you can’t see.

In addition to teaching him about caring for seeds and eventually flowers, I am teaching him patience in waiting and I am teaching him to have faith in the future.

Having faith and believing that the future is going to be good is a very important lesson to teach to children. Yes, the current news may be bad, but we can’t give up believing we can make the future better. Children need to learn that they can control their destiny and starting with planting seeds is an easy way to teach that.

Science has shown that seeds turn into plants with sun and water, but they still can’t explain why or how the seed knows when to open.

I think that’s where God comes in. We plant the seeds of faith and hope and He delivers by instructing the seed to open and spring forth it’s bounty that God has provided for us just by doing the work required and………believing.

I can’t think of a sweeter lesson to teach my child.

Our greenhouses are the plastic containers strawberries come in, egg cartons and clear, old plastic food containers. We punch a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage, a couple of holes in the lid for venting. We then use a seed starter mix and water everyday. We put them in a sunny place on the back porch and we wait. You can also cover the containers with clear plastic bags if you don’t have lids.
