The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled cribs with sides that slide down sold from 1993 through October 2009. Check out the CPSC’s website for all the details. This is the largest crib recall ever. They are cribs from Stork Craft brand that also can carry the Fisher Price brand name. The cribs’ drop side plastic hardware can break causing a gap that the baby can fall into causing injury and suffocation. Tragically four infants already have died. If you have one of these cribs stop using it immediately and you will have to wait for a free repair kit. Not very convenient I know, but it is necessary.
Many groups have tried unsuccessfully to have these types of cribs, with the sliding down sides banned due to the possibility of this happening. It is recommended that you not buy these types of cribs at all. As always, when shopping for a crib, do a lot of research. Look up recalls, read consumer safety reviews, talk to your pediatrician and talk to other parents on what they like and what they don’t like.
Regardless of what type of crib you use, take the time to inspect it to make sure there isn’t a possible problem that could emerge causing a dangerous scenario while your little angel sleeps.
